Town Creek Indian Mound

Town Creek is a reconstructed ceremonial center created by the Creek Indians who occupied this area from around 1250 to 1450 ADLocated near the Montgomery-Richmond County line. This, the only known site of an Indian temple mound in piedmont North Carolina, is a fine example of the wealth of early American artifacts and culture which make this region son unique and very important to Native American scholars from across the southeast and the nation.

Town Creek is a reconstructed ceremonial center created by the Creek Indians who occupied this area from around 1250 to 1450 AD. A stockade surrounds the grounds and reconstructed buildings including a temple atop an earthen mound, a minor temple near the river, a mortuary, and a plaza area with a game pole. No one lived within the compound except priests, but it served as a fortified refuge, a place for important discussions, and the site of religious ceremonies and political activities. Archaeological research at the site began in 1936. Today much of the site has been excavated and the information gained has been used to guide reconstruction. A visitor center adjacent to the site features displays interpreting the life of the Creek Indians.
