Town Creek Indian Mound Town Creek is a reconstructed ceremonial center created by the Creek Indians who occupied this area from around 1250 to 1450 AD. A stockade surrounds the grounds and reconstructed buildings including a temple atop an earthen mound, a minor temple near the river, a mortuary, and a plaza area with a game pole. No one lived within the compound except priests, but it served as a fortified refuge, a place for important discussions, and the site of religious ceremonies and political activities. Archaeological research at the site began in 1936. Today much of the site has been excavated and the information gained has been used to guide reconstruction. A visitor center adjacent to the site features displays interpreting the life of the Creek Indians. (910) 626-2626 Town Creek Indian Mound
